In order to protect volunteers while performing their duty in responding to the people within Daraa governorate, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent implemented a training workshop for volunteers from various departments, which focused on working in an environment contaminated with mines and other remnants of war.
Multiple themes and one goal
In order to educate volunteers about the threats in the areas that may contain mines and remnants of war and guide them to safer behavior during their field work, the training workshop – which lasted for 3 days and was attended by 74 volunteers – covered the following themes:
- The global size of the problem
- Efforts towards a solution
- The Risks
- Dangerous areas
- Warning indicators
- Safety messages and safer behavior
The MRE and ERW in lines
The Awareness Section on the dangers of mines and unexploded remnants of war assesses villages and towns affected by remnants of war and helps theirs victims, in addition to conducting awareness sessions to reduce their injury by presenting activities explaining the danger of these remnants and the correct way to deal with them if they encountered them. The section distributes brochures bearing safety messages such as (Do not touch, do not approach, inform the concerned authorities immediately). These messages are delivered by the volunteers in different ways according to the targeted age group.
