On the occasion of the World Humanitarian Day, Aug 19th, 2015, and in cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, the Office for the Coordination of the Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) organized an activity in Damascus Opera House.
Dr. Abdulrahman Attar, President of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and Mr. Yacoub El Hillo, UN Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator in Syria, attended the activity and had participation in an open debate there.
During the debate, Dr. Attar noted that commemorating the World Humanitarian day is highly important for Syria’s people suffering to be heard all over the world and to shed light to SARC great exerted efforts as well as its huge sacrifices that reached to 48 martyrs who lost their lives in line of the humanitarian duty. “Throughout the last five years, SARC has played an important role in delivering relief aid to the most vulnerable people all over the country including the hotspot areas”. In the same context Dr. Attar assured that commitment to neutrality and independency principles, the cooperation with the partners and being supported by the government marks SARC as trustworthy and enables it to reach most of the affected people. He also mentioned that SARC is working currently on livelihood projects that provide small enterprises loans to young people and allow them be Self-reliance with new finance resources”.
On his turn Mr. Yacoub El Hillo praised the efforts exerted by aid workers of the humanitarian organizations in Syria and appreciated their braveness and selflessness in delivering relief aid to all needy people. He also mentioned SARC as a major partner who shoulders more than half of the humanitarian work in Syria.
