My name is Ibrahim Shukhais, I am 21 and a computer graduate from Lattakia Technical Institute. I am also a member of the ambulance team in Lattakia for the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
To be, being a volunteer means that you should do your job to your best ability without waiting for anything in return.
My grandmother suffers from ill heath, she always needs for a constant care. One day , while we were eating dinner she choked on some food but I did not know what to do. That’s why I decided to do a first aid course.
I started volunteering for the Syrian Arab Red Crescent Lattakia branch in 2011, I trained the first aid , I loved it, mastered it, and I achieved the first place among my group , so I joined the ambulance teams as part of the organization.
I can’t forget an accident that happened a few months ago , when I was with our team in a mission with a medical emergency ambulance to transport a young man who was suffering a broken leg to the hospital. On the way back , we received news that a number of shells had fallen in a busy street in Lattakia. We went directly to the place, we were the first to arrive. We responded in a quick and careful way, we moved several cases where people had fractures, amputation and shrapnel wounds. I believe that it is necessary to be a paramedic , because in some cases, the ambulance and its crew can save someone’s life, they can make the difference between life and death…
I would like to advise everyone to take the first aid courses that are offered by the organization , because you do not know when you may have to use what you have learned during the training.
It’s a strange feeling , a mix of joy , pride and satisfaction when I’m the cause of saving the life of any one …
