The high costs of supplies, added to the scarcity of forage resources, drought, and declining production, pose some of the challenges facing beekeepers and force many to leave.
Ghassan, a beekeeper from Qanawat in Sweida is an example, as he almost lost his profession after 25 years, before a grant he received revived his hopes and career.
The sixty-year-old man received basic supplies for honey production from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, which enabled him to offset the beehives he previously had to sell and add 5 new ones.
He also managed to harvest honey twice during the past year, thus, he achieved self-sufficiency and sold the surplus.
“The grant has revived my land as well, the bees have pollinated the apple trees, which helped improve the quality of the fruits.” Said Ghassan about the grant,
This grant was delivered to 200 beekeepers in Sweida. It included basic supplies such as wooden beehive kits, wax, and pollen traps, with the support of the International Committee of The Red Cross.
