Dr. Attar, President of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), received Mr. Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the accompanied delegation, which included Mr. Robert Mardini, regional director of the ICRC, and Ms. Maryan Ghasser, head of ICRC delegation in Syria, in Al-Zahera Centre of SARC –Damascus branch on Tue, Feb 23rd 2016. Mr. Maurer knocked about the emergency and the operation departments and watched the carried out works at dialysis, laboratory, clinics and the CT department. He also visited the psychosocial support department and expressed his high admirations to the professional efficiency of the workers there.
During the visit, Dr. Attar stressed the importance of the ICRC support and the great role played by SARC volunteers. “More than 53 volunteers martyred on the frontlines in line of their humanitarian duties. Whatever Mr. Maurer has seen today of great services delivered by SARC to the most vulnerable people are matched through huge efforts exerted by SARC volunteers” said Dr. Attar.
On his part Mr. Maurer said “Eleven thousand volunteers of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent work all across Syria. I met some of them today in an impressive health center in Damascus city. A few of them I have known since 2012, when the war was just starting and they, too, were just starting out to treat the sick and wounded, and today they are able to manage huge humanitarian operations. War creates professionals. I also saw Mahmoud, who was displaced from Deir ez-Zor, hooked to a dialysis session at the center. He got three sessions free of charge weekly. In fact this center provides much more than expected”.
