Dr. Abdulrahman Attar, President of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), received Mr. Stephen O’Brien, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, and Mr. Yacoub El Hillo, UN Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator in Syria and the accompanied delegation in SARC’s Al-Zahera Center on Aug 16th, 2015.
Dr. Attar accompanied the delegation in a tour around the center’s departments, the disaster management unit and the first aid center. He also presented them with an explanation about the humanitarian activities and services provided by SARC in cooperation with the UN Offices in Syria. However, he noted that up to date the total donations could hardly cover 40% of the needs all over the country, and stressed on the constant cooperation between SARC and the partners in order to reach more affected people and satisfy their needs. He also mentioned SARC great loss as 48 volunteers lost their life in line of the humanitarian duty, and stressed in his name and all SARC volunteers’ name the commitment to the fundamental principles of the RCRC International Movement.
The visit included an overview presentation about SARC activities that carried out in the first half of 2015 in cooperation with the UN agencies in Syria, NGOs, IFRC and ICRC in various sectors like relief, health, teaching, psycho-social support and livelihood.
