The past ten years have not only had devastating humanitarian and economic consequences; Syria incurred serious environmental damage too, which resulted in water pollution and food insecurity, these two factors are often the main cause of diseases. Therefore, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent made promoting health awareness a high priority, and worked through its teams to intensify its development programs in a form of awareness messages disseminated among different groups of society.
The overall goal of the Health Awareness Promotion Team
Raising awareness among all individuals of waterborne diseases.
Emphasis on the essential role of hygiene in preventing infectious diseases; Especially since many residents in Syria share housing and health facilities under the current circumstances.
Securing supplies and materials that ensure maintaining hygiene.
The activities within the Multiple Disability Center
For the past three months; The Health Awareness Promotion Team intensified its efforts to disseminate three awareness messages within the Multiple Disabilities center, the number of beneficiaries reached 114 families, including 37 men, 69 women and 7 adolescents.
Where the messages were as follows:
The first awareness message was about general and personal hygiene
Taking care of general and personal hygiene is one of the most important methods to prevent the spread of diseases, and it has a particular role in limiting the spread of COVID-19; over a month, the volunteers organized 7 sessions to consolidate the correct information for health care, and to correct misinformation.
The second awareness message was about hepatitis A disease
Hepatitis A is a common disease in Syria and it spreads in the unhygienic environment through the fecal-oral route; Therefore, over the course of five sessions, the volunteers presented a comprehensive review of the disease, from its incubation period to its infection methods, digestive and general symptoms, and ways to prevent it. They were also reminded of the importance of cleaning vegetables and fruits, washing hands with soap and water after leaving the toilet and before eating, and the importance of correctly disposing of human waste.
The third awareness message was about gynecological infections
50% of women complain of gynecological infections every year, regardless of their age and marital status; Therefore, we must be deeply aware of the causes to avoid them and know how to deal with them. And that’s why the volunteers organized three sessions that dealt with the types of infections, their causes and symptoms, and also the importance of completing treatment and following the habits that ensure prevention of recurrence of infection.
During the activity, 239 hygiene kits were distributed
A hygienic kit that contains soap, tissue paper, shampoo, washing powder, and cleaning items, in order to secure hygiene supplies because of the high prices.
No matter how far the distance, our messages will reach the ones in need
