Raising awareness helps to curb the cholera spread out

November 21, 2022
in Al-Raqaa, Lattakia, On Home, Quneitra, SARC News, Tartous
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera. The infection is often mild, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening if not treated. Once the infection was detected in the country, the #SyrianArabRedCrescent volunteers rushed to all areas and villages to raise awareness and help curb the spread of the disease.
In #Quneitra, the volunteers have visited 13 areas and villages since the beginning of Oct 2022, with #UNICEF support. They promoted protection tips among 1300 people and taught them how to avoid the disease and to make the oral rehydration solution.
In #Raqqa, the volunteers held awareness sessions for 725 families. They provide information about the disease, transmission, symptoms, and how to make the oral rehydration solution, in addition to distributing sterilization tablets and big water containers that help keep the water clean. They also assessed the situation of the water stations.
In #Hama, the volunteers targeted the schools with awareness activities that were attended by 700 students, with the #NorwegianRedCross support. In #Tartous, SARC’s medical mobile team organized an interactive play show for 79 women that aimed to deliver awareness tips on Cholera, with #UNFPA support.
In #Lattakia, a raising awareness campaign was implemented covering the schools and residential areas. SARC volunteers supported by the German Red Cross concentrated on the importance of handwashing and maintaining personal hygiene to avoid the disease.
