Under the title “The International Humanitarian Law in Syria …. Reality and Ambition”, the first event of the Syrian National Commission on IHL is launched today on May 21, 2017.
The event was opened by Dr. Faisal al-Miqdad, Deputy-Foreign Minister and president of the Syrian National Commission on IHL, Mr. Engineer Khaled Hbubati, President of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and Ms. Marian Ghaser, president of the ICRC delegation in Syria.
The event, which aimed to confirm the importance of promoting the International Humanitarian Law, was attended by members of the Syrian National Commission on IHL, prominent characters, ambassadors and representatives of ministries and international organizations
Dr. Faisal al-Miqdad delivered a speech in which he clarified that this event is to pave the way for the Syrian health and education institutions to increase its knowledge on the international humanitarian law. He also praised the role played by SARC during the Syrian crisis and its different humanitarian services provided to the citizens, and noted to the close cooperation between SARC, the ICRC and the Syrian government.
In his turn, Mr. Engineer Khaled Hbubati stressed on the importance of implementing the international humanitarian law. “We see ourselves in whatever initiative related to the implementation of the international humanitarian law, particularly in regard to the law for the protection of the emblem of the Red Crescent and the Red Cross which ensures the protection of our volunteers and staff members and enable them to reach and support the most vulnerable people with the relief services. Among the humanitarian organizations and national societies, SARC was the most affected by violations of international humanitarian law and the protection of the emblem that resulted in loss of 63 volunteers in line of humanitarian duty.” Mr. Hbubati said.
On her word, Ms. Marian Ghaser said that this event is an initiative of the Syrian National Commission on IHL, at which the ICRC is regularly invited to participate as an observer in light of its specific expertise and knowledge of international humanitarian law.
