My name is Alaa Jarboa and I’ve been a volunteer with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent since 2008. I am the leader of the first aid squads in Sweida branch. I chose to work in first aid as it gives me the ability to help people and save many lives, and puts me in direct contact with injured people. The feeling when you help some one is so hard to describe but it is special.
One of the most cases that affected me deeply me was a 20-day-old infant who was in a coma because she had my ocardialischemia when she was born.
We moved her from the Lebanese-Syrian borders to the national hospital in Sweida.
Her vital signs were changing at a great speed because of her young age and we had to observe them through her body temperature, the changing in her skin color and how she was breathing, so it was a very difficult case.
We also had to inject her with a batch of IV saline solution along with her medication which had to be administrated every 5 minutes during 4 hours of transportation to hospital. We were finally able to deliver her to the hospital in a good stable condition.
When working in the field of first aid, feelings are conflicting especially when the situation of the injured person is dangerous or difficult , you have to face your fears of losing them or losing control on your feelings and have to be fully focused at those moments. First aid in first moments is a priority for those injured and is often life-saving.
We encounter the need of first-aid in our day-to-day lives especially when one of our loved ones is in a life threatening situation. Knowing about the basic principals of first aid could mean the difference between life and death.
